Business Card Finishes: Matte, Gloss, Soft-Touch, Spot UV and Foil

What each business card finish looks and feels like, when it is worth it, and how to set up spot UV and foil files so they print where you meant.

Are matte or glossy business cards better?

Neither is better overall. Gloss makes colours and photos brighter but shows fingerprints and is hard to write on. Matte has no glare and reads cleanly, which suits minimal and text-led designs. Silk sits in between.

What is soft-touch lamination?

A thin laminate film with a velvety, suede-like feel. It gives cards a premium feel, makes colours look slightly deeper and more muted, and pairs well with spot UV or foil details.

How do I set up a spot UV or foil file?

Make a separate layer or file, the same size as your artwork, with the spot UV or foil areas as solid 100% black vector shapes and everything else white. Keep it aligned exactly with the artwork and avoid very fine detail.

Can you write on laminated business cards?

Usually not well. Ink sits on top of gloss and soft-touch laminates and can smudge. If cards need to be written on, choose uncoated stock or leave the back uncoated, and test with the pens you use.

Which finish is your standard business card?

Our standard card is 400gsm silk laminated, single or double sided. For matte, soft-touch, spot UV or foil, request a quote and we will confirm what is possible for your design and quantity.
